Stop wasting your mid-day breaks!

I’m all for staring out the window to give your eyes a break from screens but sometimes I do also want to have more productive breaks. I recently started to implement 2x10 blocks, following the 2-minute rule.

The 2-minute rule comes from David Allen’s book Getting Things Done, a book that totally changed how I see task and time management. The rule is super simple—if you can do it in 2 minutes or less, do it now. So to build on it a little more, I created 2x10 blocks. A 10 minute block where I try to fit in at least 5 two-minute tasks and just get them off my to-do list.

I’ll usually do a 2x10 block first thing in the morning and then another during one of my breaks.

Tasks I like to tackle in these blocks are

  • outstanding emails
  • a quick tidy
  • take care of my morning dishes
  • quick inspo gathering for a project
  • 2 minutes of brainstorming
  • running one load of laundry
  • responding to messages
  • answering comments
  • engaging with my community

I usually try to focus on tasks that I know I like to postpone but can derail my day if I just randomly do them throughout my day. Having the 2x10 blocks makes doing them feel more intentional and also helps me check out of a few of them at a time. Let me know if you end up trying this!

Two more things

A pencil case I’ve been loving. I ordered this a while back because I wanted a flatter pencil case that I could carry around but that would also keep my fountain pens from knocking against each other. It’s been the only one I’ve used since I got it.

A tool that helps with stress. I actually learned about these red light panels from my friend’s mom. I’ve known about the skin benefits of red light therapy for a while but I’ve been amazed to learn it’s other benefits as well. Red light therapy has been shown to help reduce inflammation, improve sleep quality, and boost energy levels. I’ve been using this during my morning meditation and have been really enjoying it!
